Fee Waivers Available

CalMHSA is offering a limited Fee Waiver Program to support individuals pursuing Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist certification as part of its commitment to strengthening the behavioral health workforce. 

Opportunities Available:

1. Fee waivers for Application fee:

Fee waivers are available for individuals applying for the Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist (CMPSS) certification to help cover application fees. Fee waivers are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability.
Next Steps 

  • Fill out an application. When you reach the payment step, select the “Apply for Fee Waiver” box.

  • Fee waivers are limited and awarded in the order applications are received.
  • Once your application is approved, you will need to return to pay for exam fee or apply for a fee waiver.
2. Fee waivers for Exam fee:

Fee waivers are available for individuals applying for the Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist (CMPSS) certification to help cover exam fees. Fee waivers are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to availability.

  • When you receive an email to submit payment for certification exam, return to your application dashboard to select the “Apply for Fee Waiver” box.

  • Fee waivers are limited and awarded in the order applications are received.
3. Fee waivers for 80-Hour core competency Training fee:

Fee waivers for 80-Hour core competency will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis for individuals who complete their training through a CalMHSA-approved training provider.

Next Steps 

  • Contact the training provider directly to ask for availability of no-cost training.
  • Receiving a no-cost training does not automatically guarantee an individual for an application or exam fee waiver.
4. Certification Renewals:

Certified Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists (CMPSS) are required to renew their certification every two years. CalMHSA, is pleased to offer fee waivers for all qualified renewals. This initiative ensures that cost is not a barrier to continuing your important work. Click here for information on certification renewal. 

Eligibility:  

  • Must currently be eligible for certification renewal 
  • Individuals with lapsed certifications may still qualify 
  • Must have completed the 20-hours of continuing education, inclusive of 6 hours in Law and Ethics 

Fee waivers are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until all waivers are depleted.

Waivers are non-transferable.
